about

'Sven Laux and Logic Moon (Tobias Lorsbach) meet for the first time for ‘The Unavoidable Death of Loneliness’: a meandering, expressionist venture at the cross-section of classical and ambient.

The pair of composers – one a freelance sound designer, the other a software developer – interlink their broad skillsets and approaches to technology. Old amplifiers, radios, and tape recorders breathe added emotion into the compositions, which the duo both state came from an effortless collaboration, driven by a distinct prior sense of loneliness.

While music is very often referred to as a journey – suggesting a path laid out in front – The Unavoidable Death traverses as a wander, a trip through emotions encountered first-hand and unprocessed. While conceived during the severely isolated times of 2020, and released in a time where lockdown fatigue is hitting new highs, the album speaks to loneliness on a more familiar and fundamental level – that of unexpected loss.

Through extended, thoughtfully composed pieces, expressions of despair, anguish, confusion, and exhilaration present themselves in ever-moving flux. Just like in the grief-laden mind, clear emotions are hard to grasp for too long, before they slip away in the darkness. Dizzying yet morbidly alluring, trembling strings swell and crash like waves, over delicate piano melodies, shimmering guitar, and dark, pulsating electronics.

From the pensive, Loscil-Esque pulse of We Had Yesterday, and the rhythmic Frahmian classical crossover in Your Never Really Knew Me, to the lush, arching strings of the Winged Victory-like finale, there are elements throughout the album that should ring familiar with fans of many of the scene’s most established voices. While melodic writing is essentially minimalist, instruments and sounds gradually layer and compound for driving, emotional passages, which speak to the turbulence often found in lonely contemplation.

Like an internal dialogue, The Unavoidable Death mutates continually - ever-changing, expressing, chattering - never dwelling on the same exact thought as before. These are emotions formed, put to paper, but as though still raw and unfiltered, a free association of musical feeling. Vast soundscapes, rich orchestral composition, deft electronic synth work, and a propensity for real emotion bring together elements of beauty from the entire ambient-classical spectrum. The result is an album whereby each listen will uncover something not previously noticed.'

'Buried in our introspective gaze, the sea carries us to a place where our memories can finally rest. Sven Laux & Logic Moon paint melancholic soundscapes that tease a hopeful world beyond the pale, but each string arrangement, guitar missive, and electronic passage doesn’t let that warm glow get too bright. The world can be an ugly place, but if we listen closely a severed beauty will reveal itself. This is a dense album that demands close attention.'

'[...] So “can you die of loneliness?” or can that loneliness expire on its own, if not experienced through human nature for some time? And this inevitable fate of the detachment through this time is what achieves a sign of hope. This is the light that shines through the murkiness of layered sounds, through ebbing waves of texture and through space. A wonderful collaboration of two talented artists that seems to mislead into thinking it was born of a single mind. [...]'

'[...] Together they have created an expressionist journey that flows river-like over the course of eight meticulously detailed and sumptuously layered tracks that ruminate on the range of emotions rooted in a shared experience we have all come to know too well, including the composers – despair, anguish, confusion, and exhilaration. It is a river in constant flux and movement as melodic piano and guitar lines tug against tenebrous strings and pulsing rhythms while old amplifiers, radios, and tape recorders are deployed to add an element of human connection and warmth. The music winds its way through some dark places, but as the title suggests there is always a glimmer of hope on the horizon that the loneliness will end before it ends us. [...]'
